Introduction :
-
Make sure that the graphic tablet is properly connected and working.
For the best results, the mouse cursor should be at the upper left corner
of the screen when the stylus is at the upper left corner of the graphic
tablet working surface. Again, the mouse cursor should be at the lower
right corner of the screen when the stylus is at the lower right corner
of the graphic tablet working surface. If this is not the case, set the
graphic tablet parameters by refering to its documentation.
-
Make sure that a sound card is installed in the computer, is properly
configured and works, and that headphones and a microphone are properly
connected to this card and working.

Part I
: Installing Escritor 1.0.1 under Windows 95/98
[Summary] [Next part]
You can download free of charge the last official Escritor
release
via Intenet, from this site :
http://www.linux-france.org/prj/escritor/
using the download page menu. You can choose between the "Inst_CD.exe"
file (approx. 3Mb) and the "Ins3Dsk.exe" file (that should be deflated
on your computer hard drive, then copied on three floppies before proceeding
to the installation). Moreover, part III makes references to the use of
the "Geograph.exe" example file that you can download free of charge
at the same address. Make sure you have the latest releases of these files
before starting.
1°) Decompressing the downloaded
file :
At this point, you should have the "Inst_CD.exe" file
or the floppy version "Inst3Dsk.exe" file. The following lines are dedicated
to the installation of Escritor using the "Inst_CD.exe" file.
Double-click on the "Inst_CD.exe" file icon. A decompressing procedure
dialogue box appears :
This box indicates that the Escritor installation
files are going to be decompressed by default in the "C:\Esc_Temp" directory.
Just click on the
button and the extraction begins. If everything goes right, a window opens
at the end of the process, indicating "10 files deflated successfully".
Click on the
button to close it. Then click on the
button to close the decompressing process window.
2°)
Running the installation of
Escritor
:
In the "task bar" (often at the bottom of the screen
- if this is not the case, move the mouse cursor until it "touches" the
bottom of the screen to let it appear), click on the "Start" button, then
choose "Execute?" :
A windows appears. Erase (if necessary) the text it
contains in order to write "C:\Esc_Temp\Setup".
Finally, click on the
button. The installation procedure begins.
3°)
Installing Escritor
:
After a few seconds, a presentation page is displayed.
Just click on the button.
Click again on the
button. The text of the Escritor licence (GPL - General Public
Licence) is displayed in two languages. Make sure you have read it all,
understood and accepted before clicking on the
button (or close the installation window and do not use Escritor).
After that, click on .
An important page appears :
By default, a "typical" installation is selected. It
includes the complete installation of Escritor. If you only
want to install the runtime release (not the creation release) intended
for student use, choose "Compact". Choose "Personnalised" only in case
of a new partial installation of the programs, due by instance to the loss
of certain data. Then click on the
button, then again on ,
then again on .
The decompressing procedure begins. After a while, a window offers to "Visualize
the README file". Check the white box in front of it (if necessary), and
click on the
button. The installation finishes, opening the Windows
"note
pad". Read the displayed informations, and click on the little
button at the upper right corner of the window. Congratulations, you've
installed Escritor successfully ! You don't need the "Inst_CD.exe"
file anymore, because Escritor has been installed.
Part II
: Setting the Windows 95/98 parameters
[Summary] [Previous
part] [Next part]
1°) Setting the task bar
for Escritor :
Click on the "Start" button on the task bar, then select
"Parameters", and finally "Task bar".

A new window appears :

Validate the check buttons "Always visible" and
"Mask automatically" if they weren't already. Finally, click on
the
button.
2°)
Setting the display parameters for
Escritor:
Click with the right mouse button in an empty
area of the screen (which doesn't contain any icon). A "contextual
menu" appears :

Select "Property". A window appears :

Click on the "Configuration" tab (upper right).
Move the cursor "Desk space" to the left until "640 by 480 pixels"
is displayed. Choose 65535 colours by clicking on the triangle
button stuck to the right side of the "Colour palette" box, then
using the vertical lift if necessary.

Finally, click on the
button to validate. In certain cases, the computer will have to reboot
to validate your parameters. Anyway, always accept this because the screen
resolution has to be defined to fit to Escritor for optimal
use. Set the old parameters back if you wish when you stop using Escritor.
Part III
: Installing a sample page published through the Internet
[Summary] [Previous
part] [Next part]
The following tutorial assumes that you have already
installed Escritor 1.0.1 as described in part I and II, and
that you have downloaded the sample page of Geography "geograph.exe"
from the Escritor official site http://www.linux-france.org/prj/escritor/,
unless you have got it by different means. To install the page, double-click
on the "geograph.exe" file icon (auto-decompressing) that you have
just downloaded, and accept the default installation directory it shows,
as you did (look at part I) with the decompressing process of the Escritor
installation files by clicking on the
button. Close the "success" window with the
button, then click on the
button. That's it ! You don't need the "geograph.exe" file anymore,
because the "geo01.ecr" exercise page it contains is now installed.
